Back to Charitable Giving Main Page If you are contemplating a charitable gift now in your will, we'd like you to consider Legal Services for Cape Cod and Islands, Inc. (LSCCI).

LSCCI is a private, tax-exempt charity dedicated to the provision of free, high-quality legal services to low-income and elderly citizens of Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and eastern Plymouth County. We've been serving the economically disadvantaged of our communities since 1968. Perhaps we have assisted you-or someone you know. Maybe you attended one of our many community education programs - on nursing home issues, Medicaid, coping with the death of a spouse or other elder law issues at your local senior center, church or social group. Maybe you once consulted with an LSCCI attorney at one of our many outreach sites. Or perhaps you have a friend or relative who was represented by LSCCI in a landlord/tenant dispute, or a divorce or a government benefits matter.

Over the past twenty-five years, LSCCI has represented tens of thousands of people who needed legal assistance to obtain or secure the very basic necessities of living:
One elderly woman was living in a condemned home when she contacted us. The roof leaked badly, the floors had collapsed and her back door was no more than a shower curtain. With LSCCI's assistance, she now lives in a modern subsidized apartment.
LSCCI attorneys prevented the threatened winter closure of a condominium project which would have left three widows who resided there homeless for the winter.
Literally hundreds of people who had been denied Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income benefits now receive the benefits to which they are entitled because of our intervention on their behalf.

The Next Century
There are thousands of these stories, and people who need our ahead to the next century, we face some daunting realities:
Many of our traditional funding sources have withered and competition is fierce for newer sources of funds.
The number of very elderly (85 and older) people living in our area may well triple by the end of this decade.
Many of these very elderly people live far removed from their families and need assistance in handling their affairs.

As we look toward the future, we need to develop new strategies for extending our services and expanding opportunities for individuals to contribute toward our work. That's where you come in.
How You Can Help
All gifts to LSCCI, during your lifetime or at your death, will help us better serve our communities, providing legal assistance to low-income and elderly people and insuring that the legal process is played out on a level playing field regardless of the wealth of the parties.
Gifts under your will can be made simply by a specific bequest in the will or in a codicil.
If you are considering a substantial current gift to LSCCI, but cannot see your way clear to giving up the property entirely now, there are other ways to make a gift. For example:

A Charitable Lead Trust is an agreement in which only the income generated by assets placed in trust can be paid to LSCCI for a fixed period of time, with the principal returning to you or passing to your family at the end of that period.
A Charitable Remainder Trust allows you to transfer property into a trust, keep income from the trust yourself during your lifetime or for a fixed period and have the property pass to LSCCI at your death or at the end of the fixed period. Such trusts can be very attractive to donors who wish to preserve their income and make a gift at death. Indeed, where the donor has highly appreciated assets with relatively low levels of income, creating such a trust can often substantially increase income while providing the benefit of a charitable deduction.

These and other gifting techniques can be arranged on an individual basis with LSCCI. We will be pleased to provide you with legal counsel or your attorney with specific information on all types of gifting opportunities.
We will be grateful for your consideration of LSCCI and the needs of our low-income and elderly clients as you plan your charitable giving. We will be pleased to provide you with legal counsel or your attorney with specific information on all types of gifting opportunities.
