LSCCI Logo Free Legal Help for Low-income People

For a quarter century Legal Services for Cape cod and Islands, Inc. has served the legal needs of low-income and elderly citizens of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and up the coast into eastern Plymouth County.

If you are elderly, disabled or live on a low income and have a problem that requires legal assistance, LSCCI may be able to help you. There is no charge. We can only represent people who are eligible for our services
Here's What We Do
Government Benefits
LSCCI's Benefits Unit helps clients obtain the government benefits to which they are entitled, including:

TAFDC
MassHealth
Food Stamps
Emergency Assistance to the Elderly, Disabled and Children
Unemployment Compensation
Emergency Assistance
Fuel Assistance
Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and
Veterans Services

Whether representing individual clients or helping a whole group of MassHealth recipients get access to health care, the Benefits Unit advocates for poor people in court and before various public agencies to help them obtain the assistance they need to survive.

Disability
LSCCI's Disability Benefits Project works with disabled clients to increase their access to public facilities and benefits and to prevent discrimination and homelessness. The Project's primary objective is to assist recipients of the state's Emergency Assistance to the Elderly, Disabled and Children program in qualifying for Supplemental Security Income benefits, thus improving clients' financial stability and access to health care, while at the same time saving money for the Commonwealth.

Housing
LSCCI has long been known as a forceful and effective advocate for increasing and improving housing for low- income people. Our Housing Unit represents clients facing:
lock-outs or evictions
discrimination
termination from public housing programs
utility shut-offs, and
poor housing conditions.

Our housing advocates also work with tenant organizations and others in the community to help develop low-income housing throughout our service area.

Family Law
Some of LSCCI's staff attorneys and paralegals specialize in family law issues. They may be able to help you if:
You or your children have been victims of domestic abuse;
You need a divorce;
You are involved in a custody dispute; or
You have been contacted by the Department of Social Services.

In addition, numerous volunteer attorneys throughout our area represent low-income clients in family law matters without charge if they are referred by LSCCI.

Elderly Law
LSCCI's Elder Law Project takes legal assistance directly to elderly clients by "riding circuit" each month to twelve different sites in various towns, helping clients deal with a patchwork system of services that does not adequately meet the needs of the elderly population. Access to benefits, health care and safe and secure housing for older people are high priorities for the Elder Law Project. Representation in all legal areas is available to Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket elders; Plymouth County residents may call with Medicare issues.

Private Bar Involvement
In addition to our own highly dedicated and experienced staff attorneys and paralegals, LSCCI enjoys the enthusiastic support and participation of private attorneys from every corner of our service area who contribute hours of their time to projects that help meet the legal needs of low-income people.

How to Find Us
LSCCI has two conveniently located and accessible offices, in Hyannis and Plymouth. Our office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call us if you need legal assistance. If our own staff attorneys and paralegals are unable to represent you in your particular case, chances are we can either tell you how to work out your problem yourself or refer you to a private attorney who will help you free or at a reduced fee.
